Preseason Bracket Predictions

November 9, 2009 5:38 pm
Radford was given a 15 seed by CBS, which I'm happy to see. I think RU can pull a 15 seed this year if they play well... maybe even a 14.  They need to sweep the Big South easily (or 1 or 2 close losses) and beat a couple decent nonconference teams though. i.e. George Mason, Duquesne, JMU, Navy and William and Mary.  These are all teams that RU lost to last year. With an improved team this year and deeper bench, they should be able to win atleast 4 out of 5 of these games.  Given RU wins the Big South, these are the 5 games that will make or break our seed.

Thoughts?

With our RPI being in the 70s, and our SOS being 11 according to USA Today, if we beat JMU, at least play close in Bracket Busters and take care of conference, a 15 or 14 is easily obtainable.

The Navy win was a great win, no doubt. They are a bottom-half Patriot league team though, someone we should have beat last year, free throws were the bain of Radford in that game last year.

We will probably at least beat W&M, and possibly Mason, although they have looked really tough against Nova, and basically that whole Puerto Rico tourney. W&M just beat Wake by double digits as well.

The Duquense game is one we should have won, we played horribly. Lazar returning is going to be a huge factor for us, because it might give us some consistency in the outside game. Blake Smith or Evan Faulkner stepping it up from the outside would be huge offensively. We also have to think about what kind of effect Gorkem Sonmez will have when he comes back.

Still, the lost to a Duquense team by 8 isn't going to drop us a seed, because they are a high mid-major/low major conference, and it was at their place.

We need an outside prescence, a consistent one, and we need to hit our freebies like we did last year.

Artisom Parakhouski is having a huge year and will continue to do so.

Lazar will be active for the Winthrop game, hopefully Joey Lynch-Flohr can settle down, and get back into his game. We're going to be incredibly difficult in conference with three operative bigs.

We haven't been full strength yet, and full strength is going to be scary. I think we're going to give Louisville a good run, since we will have been at full strength for nearly a month by then. If we're going to do a big upset this year, that's it.

15 sounds about right to me, right now, 14 isn't impossible though.

Well there is the first one... Beating Navy by 11 is huge for Radford.  With 2 freshman starters and a 4-year starting point guard on the bench the entire game, they proved alot tonight.   Lots to improve on, but this was the start that Radford needed...
